Going on the Offensive

By Jonathan Gardner

I am a Christian, or at least I try to be. I guess I have had enough.

I have the power to influence my government, to influence the laws that are written and the laws that are enforced. Because I am one of 300 million people in this country, I am, in a way, empowered.

I think, like Christ’s allegory of the servants given talents, I am required to use what I have to the best of my ability.

And that demands that I use my power to build a society where children are safe to roam every corner of our cities, where people are allowed to freely speak their mind and not suffer injury for it, and where a child can grow up in a family with a mother and father who are dedicated to each other.

I don’t want a country where homosexuals (or anyone else) are allowed to spit upon, ridicule, and persecute with sexual harrassment and foul language others whom they disagree with. If there is an injury, you can use our courts to arbitrate the matter. If there’s a crime, you can use the police to enforce the matter. If your life is in danger, you are allowed to defend yourself or others in similar danger.

But you are never allowed to do what was done to these people in the Castro district of San Francisco. (link)

I propose a series of laws. Those of you who agree with me are just as capable of seeing this through as I am.

The first regards rude behavior that interrupts the public peace. If you are doing or saying anything that makes someone feel threatened, that’s a big no-no. The only time you can threaten someone is if they are committing a crime or in self-defense. (Obviously, this wasn’t happening here.) The punishment is prison time for at least a few days to think about what it means to be a member of our society.

The second regards sexually explicit behavior in public places. It should be strictly forbidden. I even propose that we tear down all the porn houses and such. There’s no reason we need to tolerate this kind of thing in our country. There’s no reason why we should allow anybody to profit by corrupting the reproductive process which only should be practiced in a lawfully married couple.

The third proposal is to criminalize adultery, fornication, and all forms of sexual activity outside of marriage. There is a cost to society for this behavior. For starters, it dehumanizes people. Then there is the cost to the children born of such a union. Every child should be born in stable families with a mother and father who are committed to each other to raise them. But there is also the cost to those who are coerced into this kind of activity. I don’t believe that there are many girls who would participate in this kind of behavior if it were properly discouraged.

Go ahead and say I am a prude, or that my values don’t belong in your pants. It’s a shallow argument. My values belong in your guns, in your business, in the way your house is built, and the way you express yourself politically. But also, I believe our culture is rapidly heading off a cliff because we are, as a people, becoming less and less caring for each other, more and more driven by lust and greed, and no longer feel a responsibility to exercise our natural abilities for good purposes.

I would love to have a national, or even just a state-wide, debate on this topic.

If the federal constitution is in the way, then we need to change the federal constitution to allow states to regulate sexual activity. It is in the best interests of our children that we do so.
