The Ultimate Powers

by

“I know no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education. This is the true corrective of abuses of constitutional power.” –Thomas Jefferson, letter to William Charles Jarvis, 1820

Let me translate to even plainer English.

The ultimate power of government is in the people. When the government violates the constitution, the people are supposed to hold the government accountable. When the people become stupid, the solution is not more government but to educate the people.

Wise words for today.

GREAT post! Education must begin within the family and the home. You cannot depend on the public school system or the liberal universities. They have an agenda.

Have you heard about the Huge Townhall / Tea Party happening in D.C. on Saturday 9/12? It will be a historical stand for freedom. Buss loads of citizens will be coming from around the country, to make their voices heard. Watch a video about it here:

    God Bless!

    Sir,

I have been for some time following your writings of our current situation. I am a grandfather and father, husband and son, I am an American. I understand that this is not the proper format in resonding to your post, however I could no longer not respond. I wish often to find the correct answer in helping my children and grandchildren and American’s on what and if something can be done to have the present movement towards socialism STOPPED. You are well written and your words seem to find its mark withing the deepest levels, if such exists, of my soul. Sincerely, Mike

    Mr. Gardner,

How do you proposed to expose this while the main media continually feed crap to the American people, many of which are content and apatatic and lartargic….(spelling)…none the less sometimes I believe that nothing short of a “shock and awe” senerio will effect this group of anti-American administration……

    • Jonathan Gardner Says:

The media is becoming less and less relevant every day. I believe we have already passed the 50% mark where most people now get their news directly from the source or from news aggregators like Drudge Report.

And my proposal is simply this.

First, teach yourself. Learn American History and understand the principles of government that lead to the creation of our republic. Part of this is learning morality, economics, and understanding the nature of Christianity and Christ’s message to the world.

Next, teach your family. Teach them as a loving father and grandfather, and learn what kinds of errors people believe in and how to convince them of the truth. Teach them how to teach themselves and how to teach others.

Finally, teach your community. You can teach in your church, or your local clubs, or with your hunting buddies, or whomever it is. You can run a blog or publish articles or do any number of things to get the word out. Teach them, as well, how to teach themselves and teach others.

Recall that Benjamin Franklin and the other Founding Fathers were just people, just like you and I. They changed the course of history not so much with their actions but their words and their convictions. We can do the same.

First, let’s be the type of the people we should be, and then let’s encourage others to be the types of people they should be. We cannot work the other way around, and any attempt to do so ends in failure.

You’ll note that the difference between what I am advocating with government and what Christ advocates in relation to the gospel are hardly different. In fact, they are one and the same.

As Bethie tells of the 812 project my thoughts wisk me there but reality then sinks in with the understand that, though I know it to probably be the point in our history, yet as wishing I do wanting to be there, I know I cannot. My thoughts will be on where lessons may be learned from that day…lessons of true Patriotic Americans….

  5. American Says:

I truly wish not to convey any illcontent but I would humbly advise you that your last writing did not have Republic capitolized….for my own curiosity, was it intentionally or accidental.

    • Jonathan Gardner Says:

Intentional. A “republic” shouldn’t be capitalized any more than “empire”, “democracy”, “kingdom”, “province”, “state” should be. It’s simply a form of government. It’s only capitalized as part of a name, like “Republic of Korea”. Likewise, “president” isn’t capitalized unless it is part of a name, like “President Washington”.

  6. American Says:

Thank you Jonathan for you clarifing this……do we have a chance to again ressurrect our, one known, great “Republic of America”……
