Milwaukee Teachers Fight for Viagra: Fight Whom?

by

An article on Milwaukee teachers “fighting” for additional health coverage struck a nerve.

If those teachers want additional coverage, why don’t they spend their own money to get it? Why do they have to “fight” to get it? Whom are they “fighting”? As far as I can see, they are fighting their own small-mindedness and silliness.

The absurdity of expecting any kind of benefit from a government job—or any job, for that matter—astonishes me sometimes. What more can you ask for besides money? Why do you insist on getting something that someone else will pay for? Why not just ask for more money instead, and spend the money on things you need for yourself the most?

If Milwaukee teachers were smart, they would simply ask for more money. They could use this money to buy Viagra or any other drugs that aren’t covered by their health insurance plan. They could even use the money to buy acupuncture or herbal treatments or other things that their health insurance won’t cover. If they’re healthy and don’t need the Viagra, they can spend the extra money on something else they do need, like braces for their kids. Or they can give the money away to help their friends or neighbors or some stranger through a charity.

The options when you get cash are endless. When you get paid with services, you are not getting your money’s worth.
